Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD “AUNT LYDIA’S” HEAVY RUG YARN2—70 yd. skeins White
1 Pr. Knitting Needles No. 8 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW
1 rubber ball—7 inch in diameter; 1 rubber ball—5½ inch in diameter; scraps Black felt; ¼ yd. Red ribbon
GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch
BODY: Make 2. Cast on 9 sts.1st ROW: K 1, P 1 in each st (18 sts).2nd and ALL EVEN ROWS: P across.3rd ROW: Inc (K 1, P 1) in every other st.5th ROW: Inc in every 3rd st.7th ROW: Inc in every 4th st.9th ROW: Inc in every 5th st.11th ROW: Inc in every 6th st.13th ROW: Inc in every 7th st.15th ROW: K across.16th ROW: P across, bind off.
HEAD: Work 2. Work 1st 10 rows same as body section, bind off.FINISHING: Steam sections. Seam body and head sections tog to have each section form circles. Weave 2 body sections tog taking up front of bound off sts and leaving an opening to insert large ball. Insert ball and weave opening closed. Finish head sections in same manner. Sew head and body sections tog. Cut circles from Black felt for buttons and eyes. Glue or sew in place. Cut nose and mouth as illustrated from Black felt and glue in place.STAND: Cut 18 strands ½ yd. long. Braid. Form circle with braid and sew in place under body section.
HAT: Cut a section of Black felt 6½ x 8 inches. Fold the 2-6½ inch ends tog and pin together. Place a marker 1 inch up on each side, then place a 2nd marker 1¼ inches in from 1st marker at each side edge. Mark center on fold, then place a marker 2½ inches from this marker. Then cut away from last marker to the 1¼ inch marker. Overcast the side edges closed leaving an opening to sew in place to top of head. Tie ribbon in place for scarf.
