Calvin Morgan McClung, son of Franklin Henry and Eliza Ann (Mills) McClung, was born May 12, 1855. In 1874 he received from East Tennessee University the degree of A. B., in 1876 from Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University that of Ph. B. and in 1877 from East Tennessee University that of A. M. He married first Annie, daughter of Col. Charles McClung McGhee, founder of Lawson McGhee Library; second Barbara, daughter of Mr. Augustus Dixon Adair, of Atlanta. He died March 12, 1919.

The collection of historical material relating to his own state and city was the absorbing interest of his later life. Accuracy and thoroughness characterized his efforts, both as student and collector. Evidence of his painstaking exactness may be seen in the marginal annotations, the clippings and letters to be found in almost every volume of his library.
