The extensive use of wire-fences calls for a farm convenience, heretofore but little known in this country—thestile. The manner of constructing one suitable for barb-wire fence is shown so plainly in the engraving, figure 271, that no description is necessary. The cross-piece, upon which one passes from one flight of steps to the other, may be of any desired width.

Stiles of convenient forms for wire fences are shown infigures 272and273. The one seen infigure 272takes less space on each side of the fence, but it is not so simple as that shown infigure 273.

Figure 274shows a passageway in a wire fence, whichrequires no climbing, and while it presents an effectual barrier to large animals, is readily passed by any but very corpulent persons. It originated and was patented in England, but we believe there is no restriction on its construction and use in this country.
