It was reproducedin the “Archives dela Société Française,” Oct.1894.Le Blond.Dessiné et gravépar Le Blond, on a namelessarmorial, dated 1785.A modern armorial plate forThomas Harrison is signed“Le Blond sc. 4 Walbrook.”Le Clerc, G.17th cent.Le Clerc, Sébastien.17thcent.A famous engraver of Metz, and afterwards of Paris, whose works were describedby Jombert in his “Catalogueraisonné de l’œuvrede Seb. Le Clerc” (Paris,1774), in which mention ismade of seven armorial“marques de bibliothèques”all signed by him.Poulet-Malassis mentions fourothers, in different sizes, allfor Nicolas Martigny deMarsal, all signed, andtwo dated 1655 and 1660.In 1701, he signedS. Le Clercinveniton the armorial plateinscribed “Matthæus FranciscusGeoffroy,” which wasengraved by Cl. Duflos. This design was afterwardsappropriated by P. Picaut,(or Picault) for a M. Veronneauof Blois. Jombert,in his catalogue, describedthis plate for M. Geoffroy,on which the mottowas, “Turris fortissimaDeus.”S. Le Clerc is credited withhaving been the first to departfrom the formal, butcorrect heraldic style, asshown on the plates of AndréFelibien, and AlexandrePetau, in order to adopt theoval shield (of Italian origin)set in a foliated cartouche, the Renaissancestyle, in fact, which graduallydeveloped into theLouis XIV. style.See “Ex-Libris Ana” (p. 31),for further details about theworks of Le Clerc. Thefollowing plates are namedas engraved by him:Jean Baptiste de Jouanne,Marquis de Saumery.Pierre Le Febvre (of Metz).Maurice Le Tellier, archevêquede Reims.Denis Godefroy de Tralage.M. de la Reynie.Bibliotheca Thuana.Le Duc de Bouillon.Etienne Baluze.M. de Beringhen. Le Daulceur studiedunder Bouchardon, and inexamining the plates signedby her, it will be seen thatshe engraved after designsfurnished by Bouchardon,Pierre, H. Gravelot, C.Eisen, and Durand, whilstPoulet-Malassis speaks ofher as “une femme dumonde, amateur de talent, gracieux intermédiaire entreles artistes ses maîtres etses amis.”Her talents appear to havebeen principally devoted toillustrating books of poemsfor her friends, and it issupposed that the ex-librisshe engraved were probablyworks of love. Thefollowing is a list of them.La Comtesse de Mellet, two,one after Bouchardon, theother signed:Le D.Montigny—two, a large and asmall one.Mignot de Montigny—afterPierre.Le Comte Thiroux de Gervillier—afterGravelot.Thiroux d’Arconville—afterGravelot.Madame d’Arconville—afterC. The original plateis in the possession of Dr.Bouland, President of theFrench Society, and impressionsfrom it were issuedwith the “Archives de laSociété Française,” in June,1894.Le Duc, Viollet.19th cent.Le Féron,à Rennes, 1767.Lefèvre.19th cent.L. Le Grandsculp.18th cent.Nameless armorial plate, forMadame Du Barry. Motto,“Boutez en avant.”This plate was engraved byLe Grand after a design byCochin fils some time before1774. It has two shieldsand supporters, and what issomewhat unusual in Frenchbook-plates, there is a crestabove the coronet.Poulet-Malassis is of opinionthat this plate was littleused by Madame Du Barry, whose books, handsomelybound in red morocco, boreher arms stamped in goldon the sides. Louis XV.remarked, “La Marquisede Pompadour avait plus delivres que la comtesse, maisils n’étaient pas si bienreliés, ni si bien choisis.”Legros, Alphonse.19th cent.About 1874, this artist (whothen resided in London)engraved the copper for thewell-knownEx libris LéonGambetta, of which only afew impressions were taken, and these were never employedas book-plates.Forgeries exist, and have beensold by the dealers in largenumbers. The original plates may beknown by a small circle onthe bottom left-hand cornerof the design in which arethe letters A.B. See “Archivesde la Société Française,”April, 1895, withwhich was issued an impressionfrom the originalcopper.Leguay, Eugène.Modern.Ex Libris Eugène Leguay.Reproduced in “Ex-LibrisAna.”Lejeune.18th cent.Le Keux, J. For many yearshe worked as an engraver, principally of portraits, which it appears he alsosold at his own shop. “Dessinéet gravé par Roy. Sevend à Paris chez Roy,graveur, sur le quai desOrfèvres.”For some years he was compelledto desist from workowing to the failure of hissight, which, however, wasrestored to him, and on hissubsequent works he alludesto this happy recovery. Thus on a portrait of Vinatier,he signs: “DessinéGravé et Offert en 1743, parson très obligé Serviteur Cl.Roy, après le Recouvrementde sa veüe.” He only produceda few ex-libris, butthese are of exceptionalmerit, and are much soughtafter. He signed at times “graveursur tous metaux.” He diedat his residence on theQuai des Orfèvres in 1792,aged 80.A nameless plate bearing thearms of Henri-Anne deFuligny Damas, Comte deRocheouart, etc., and thoseof his wife, Marie Gabriellede Pons.
