CHAP. XXXV.Of Anhalt Water.

ThisWater is supposed to have been invented by a celebrated Physician ofAnhalt, a Province of the Circle of UpperSaxony.

Take of the best Turpentine a Pound and a Half; Olibanum three Ounces; Aloes-wood powdered one Ounce; Grains of Mastick, Cloves, July-flowers, or Rosemary-flowers, Nutmegs and Cinnamon of each two Ounces and a Half; Saffron one Ounce; powder the whole and digest them six Days in eleven Gallons of Spirit of Wine; adding two Scruples of Musk tied up in a Rag; and draw off in Balneum MariƦ till it begins to run foul.

This Water is a high aromatic Cordial, invigorates the Intestines, and thereby promotes Digestion and dispels Flatulencies. It is also in great Repute as a sovereign Remedy for Catarrhs and Pains arising fromColds; as also in Palsies, Epilepsies, Apoplexies and Lethargies, the Parts affected being well rubbed with it.
