The story told in this poem was suggested to Browning, but not followed in all its details, by an adventure of Lord De Ros, a friend of Wellington's and mentioned frequently by Greville in hisMemoirs. The circumstances of De Ros's villainy were much talked of in London at the time of their occurrence, just before the middle of this century.
