AnAccountof thosePlaceswhere someGentlemenof theAURELIAN SOCIETYHave been used to collectCaterpillars,ChrysalidesandFlies,In the following Months of the Year.
(Decorative letter F)
Fromthe 15th to the 25th of this Month, aMothcalled theOrange Under-Wing, may be taken inHornsey-Wood, and in the Fields close to the Sides thereof. It flies in the Day-time, is an exceeding prettyMoth, and not to be met with in such Plenty any where else, that I know of. TheOak-Beauty, and some otherMothsare bred in this Month, but are rarely met with in theFlyState.
Inthis Month a great Variety ofCaterpillarsandChrysalidesmay be taken by the Method already described. The Banks about theChelseaWater-Works and such-like Places are most likely to furnish theChrysalidesof theHawk Tribe.
At the Roots of theElm,Lime,Willow, andPoplar Trees, you will find in thisMontha Variety ofAureliæ, which will produce theirFliesin theMayandJunefollowing.
Be now diligent to collectCaterpillarsfrom all kinds of Growths, which, if taken Care of, will produce theirFliesa few Months hence. Towards the End of this Month someFliesmay be taken in the Day-time, and someMothsin the Evening.
Thisdelightful Month brings forth in the Woods and Meads a surprising Variety ofFlies.Hornsey,Cain, andTottenhamWoods; the Woods nearSouthgate;HangingWood, byCharlton, inKent;Oak of HonourWood, byDulwich;CombWood, byKingstone, inSurrey, and the Fields adjacent are all frequented by them in this Month in the Day-time as well as in the Evening; and if the Weather be fine you will never fail of Sport. Abundance of differentCaterpillarsare likewise to be found at this Time, such as those of theEmperor-Moth, of theLappit,Drinker,Egger, and of Numbers of other Sorts.
ThisMonth adds greatly to the Number ofFliesbred inMay.—From the 20th to the 30th are usually produced: inSouthgate,Comb, andOak of HonourWoods, theGreat Fritillaryand other fineButterflies, with Plenty ofMoths; all which may be taken in and near the Woods already mentioned.
Thefirst ten Days in this Month are the Time for taking thePurple Emperor-ButterflyinCombWood; and the Fields adjacent can furnish such a charming Variety ofMothsandButterflies, that I do not know any Place where anAureliancan spend a Week with more Satisfaction and Assurance of Success. As soon as thePurple Emperor-Butterflybegins to grow bad, the Time comes on when the second Breed of theSwallow-tail Butterflyis quite fresh, as also theGreat Tortoise-shell,Peacock Butterfly, &c. About the Middle of this Month you may find theGreat Red Underwingand theGoat-Mothstanding against theWillow-Treeswhich usually grow by the Sides of Ditches about the old Barge-House,Rotherhith,Vauxhall, and likewise in other Places. Seek also for theCaterpillarsthat produce theGreat ElephantandGold-Spot Moths: the most certain Places to find which, that I know of, are by the Sides of the Ditches inRotherhithMarshes. TheCaterpillarsthat produce theElephant Mothfeeds on theWhite Ladies Bedstraw, those of theGold-Spoton theGreat Water-Grass. I have taken theGold-Spot ChrysalisandCaterpillarlikewise in the low Grounds byVauxhallinSurry.
Atthe Beginning of this Month may be found amongst theWillows, about the Banks by theChelseaWater-Works, theCaterpillarsthat produce theEyed-WillowandPoplar-Hawks, also theBuff-Tip-Puss, &c. and from the 20th to the 30th theAdmirable Butterfly, &c.
Ifthis Month proves fine, a great many scarceMothsare to be taken in the Evenings, and the second Brood of theComma-Butterfly, as well as some otherFlies, present themselves.Caterpillarsare likewise to be got in Plenty off theOak,Black-Thorn, and a Variety of other Foods; and these, if taken Care of, will produce scarce and valuableFliesin the succeeding
Spring. From the End of this Month to the Middle ofMarchthere are but fewFliesthat frequent the Fields; altho’I am of Opinion that someMothsarebred in every Month ofthe Year.
