The RED-SPOT TUSSOCK-MOTH. TheCaterpillarsare very common, feeding on mostElmandLimeTrees about Town. They make a Spinningunder the Copings of Walls, Pales,&c.at the End ofMay; and theMothis bred at the End ofJuneand inJuly. The Females have no Wings; but, if you carry one or two of them in a Box (where there is a Breed of thisMoth) the Males will follow you in order to get at them: So that, if you put the Box on the Ground, you may easily take the Cocks with your Net. Several otherMothsmay be taken by the like Means.

It is very scarce, and the Female has no Wings. I took one of theseCaterpillars, feeding onOakLeaves, on the 25th ofSeptember1748; two Days after, it spun up in order to itsChrysalisState, and, on the 8th ofOctober, theMothwas bred: From whence I conclude, thisMothbreeds twice in a Year.
