THEProlifick Seedbeing duly coagulated by a gentleEbullitionof its ownvegetative Faculty, by the Power of thePlastick Virtueof the vitalSpirits, and by the peculiar innateQualityof theMatrix; thisinlivened Substance produceth anOrganical Body, of a perfectly form’d, and delineatedFoetus: WhichFoetus, according to the variousStepsof its Progression inFormation,Animation, andMaturation, occasions as many various and differentEffectsupon theBearing Woman; as necessaryConsequencesof the said three principalActsof theInfant’sConstitution.
NOWthese consequentialEffectsmay be properly divided intoThreeClasses; which are accordingly call’dSymptomsof theFirst,Second, orMiddle; and of the lastThree Months.
BUTit is to be observ’d by the Way, that allWomenare not alike subjected to them;Somebeing more troubled withThoseof theFirst;Othersalso withThoseof theSecond; andOthersagain with theSymptomsof thelast Three Months. But there aresome Women, in fine, that continue to be troubled, in theMiddle Months, with theSymptomsof theFirst; and in theLatter, with some ofThoseof theSecond: All which happens according to their variousRegimens,DispositionsandHabitsof Body.
HOWEVER, to proceed methodically, with all Submission, according to what competentKnowledgeandExperienceI have of theConceiv’d Woman; theSymptomsmost common toHer, in theFirst Three Months, may be briefly reduced to the following principalEightin Number; namely, (1.)Vomiting or Nauseating. (2.)FastidyorLoathing. (3.)PicaorLonging. (4.)Painful CholicksorGripes. (5.)DiarrheaorLooseness. (6.)Tooth-Aches. (7.)Head-Aches. And, (8.)Swimmings of the Head. Of all which, I shall now separately treat in their Order.
