CHAP.XV.OfHEART-BEATINGSandSWOONING-FITS.

THESEBeatings orPalpitationsare nothing else but a sudden Loss of all the Strength, with an immoderateConcussion, by a vehementDiastole, and molestousSystoleof theHEART: From hence thisSYMPTOMeasily turns to aCardialgia,Lipothymia, orSyncope;which areAllof nearAffinity, in the Case of thePregnant Woman, so that I shall treat of themconjunctly, and first observe; that

THECauseof all suchSYMPTOMSare butTwo-fold, and proceed either from aflatulentSubstance of theHumours, ascending, thro’ theArteries, or theVena Cava, to theHEART: Or from theAbundanceofBlood, which (not finding passage by theWomb) seeks to thesuperiour Parts, and thence oppresses theHEARTandvital Faculty.

THISLastis the most dangerousCondition, being (in suchPlethorick Women) the certainPrognostickof imminentABORTION: To prevent which unhappyAccident, the principal Part of theCure, depends very much on cautiousVenæ-Sections, or letting Blood, properDiet, &c: Whereas, in theFirst Case, properDiscutients,Cordials, andCorroborants, are the most convenient and successful.
