TWOthird Partsof the common Duration and Conjuncture ofChild-bearing, being, by this time faithfully, if not so fully, accounted for; it remains now, that we also more particularly consider theMotherand herInfantthroughout the lastThree Months-Travail. These are theFinishing Maturating Monthsof theINFANT: I mean peculiarly, as to itsStrengthandVigour; since in other respects, theMiddle Monthshave dulyperfectedthe Ornaments of theparticular Members, and gracefully compleated theShapeandFormof the whole Body.
WHEREFORE, as, in theselatter Months, theCHILDencreases inBulk,Vigour, andActivity, it then affords the tenderMotherincredibleUneasinesses, and grows sometimes almostObstreperous: WhichAugmentationof theFoetus(of natural Consequence) occasionsin her Constitution of Body various differentEffects; call’dSYMPTOMSof the lastThree Months.
NOWtheseSYMPTOMS, I hope I may pertinently reduce to the followingNine, in Number; namely, 1.Dysuries; 2.Ischuries; 3.Stranguries; 4.Costiveness; 5.Tenesms; 6.Varices; 7.Inflationsof theLegs; 8.Fissuresof the Belly; and 9. and lastly,Water-Fluxes. Of which I shall take leave to treat separately, in their proper Order.
